Kottayam
Home to some of the most popular tourist destinations of Kerala, Kottayam is known for its highly literate society, its curious blend of the urban and the rural, large number of plantations and for being the centre of the Malayalam publishing industry.
The Vembanad lake in the district includes Kumarkom, perhaps the most popular of all the backwaters in Kerala. The placid, emerald waters of Kumarkom have been attracting tourists in large numbers and many of Kerala’s best resorts and hotels can be found here. The bird sanctuary at Kumarakom hosts a wide variety of avian species including migratory birds. The lake is also the venue of a number of exciting events in Kerala’s traditional boat race calendar. The entire district seems to be under a green carpet with large stretches of paddy fields and numerous rubber plantations. The district is very close to popular destinations in the neighbouring districts, like Thekkady wildlife sanctuary, Peermedu, Vagamon, Kuttanad etc. Kottayam is also known for its delicious cuisine which is greatly inspired by Dutch and West Asian cuisines while remaining identifiably Keralite.
